MITEC Gains the Stamp of Approval by CEI Asia

Centre recognised as Rising Star’ Venue under the publication’s Editors’ Choice Awards

Kuala Lumpur, 28 January 2019 – The Malaysia International Trade & Exhibition Centre (MITEC) strategic growth in the country’s business events landscape is certainly making great strides for a relatively new industry player.

The Venue which is going into its second year of operation, was recently recognised by one of the region’s long-standing trade publication, CEI Asia through the Editors’ Choice Awards. Held annually since 2017, the judging criteria for the awards is based on a consensus recommendation by editors who are frequent travellers.

“It is great to be seen as the rising star. CEI Asia is a credible publication of the industry, with deep understanding of how things are navigated in business events. For an authoritative voice to see us in this light, it is truly an honour,” said Gunther Beissel, Chief Executive Officer of MITEC.

The award was received based on many merits, with major attribution to the Centre being the third-largest venue in Southeast Asia. It is capable of hosting ‘mega-exhibitions’ for over 100,000 visitors and conventions with the capacity of 20,000.

Apart from size, MITEC also wins when it comes to a well thought of architectural structure. With detailed planning, MITEC has heavy-duty loading exhibition halls on level one with a maximum floor loading of 50kN/sqm, enabling it to support the weight of heavy machinery and vehicles. The ceilings also go up to 36m high making even indoor sporting events feasible. These features are the first of its kind in Malaysia.

Emphasizing beyond physical layout, Beissel also said that the MITEC team heavily places priorities on strategy. “In 2018, we have been exceptionally successful in partnerships. Locking down a five-year agreement with United Business Media (M) Sdn. Bhd (UBM Malaysia), we will host four of UBM’s renowned events from 2019 – 2023 and a biennial event from 2019 – 2028. We also sealed an exclusive collaborative partnership with Guangdong Tanzhou International Convention & Exhibition Centre (GICEC) China, already carving our presence in Asia. These are long-term business partnerships that will increase our international outreach and generate the economic impact for Malaysia,” added Beissel.

MITEC also had a fruitful 2018:

  • Won the bid to bring the major AIPC Annual Conference 2020;
  • Total number of events held: 135 (108 national and 27 international);
  • Total number of exhibitions: 18;
  • Total foot count: 282,390 (both local and international events);
  • Launched a refreshed, highly engaging website focusing on user experience; and
  • Developed a 360 Virtual Reality sales tool for the Centre, used during international roadshows and events.

After a remarkable 2018, Beissel also spoke on plans this year. “2019’s strategy for events would be luring sectors such as but not limited to digital automation, smart manufacturing, agriculture, medical, science and technology as these are the knowledge centres that we wish to attract into Malaysia. Partnerships will be explored hence we are looking into purposeful support that will be beneficial to our partners. Finally, not forgetting the society we function in. For Malaysians, it will be about building a more beneficial community relationships, job creation and steady economic growth to contribute to the nation-development process”.

Beissel also concluded that winning the awards by CEI Asia has made a profound motivation mark on the MITEC team, pushing the Centre to further build a stronger reputation and strive towards excellence.
